Flora and Fauna -- Outdoor Art Commission for Pier Redevelopment, City of New Westminster in BC

JANUARY 2012 -- The Pier was redesigned and built in strict accordance with new environmental building technologies. Iconic images of flora and fauna that are natural, or naturalized, to the area are used in this outdoor mural commissioned by the City of New Westminster in BC for their Pier Redevelopment. The flora and fauna were chosen with Gary Williams, Biologist, GL Williams & Associates, to ensure scientific accuracy and geographic relevancy.

The mural was designed using digital photography-based applications. It was printed in full colour and sealed with thick plastic, to protect it and make it last through four seasons of every weather condition.

The last 3 images show the site prior to the redevelopment, and one shows the building plans for the children's park where the signage hangs.

The phrase I used sounds like a famous quote, but after thorough research I found it has no attribution: "When one tugs at a single thing in nature, one finds it connected to the rest of the world." It was perfect for the eco-friendly build of the pier, the childlike, playful design with the flora and fauna, and to inspire...with the mystery, importance and function of nature in our life.
